This Advice Changed How I See Legacy (And Life)

Sometimes, it takes a life-changing event to shine a light on what truly matters.

For me, having my first child was one of those moments.

During that time, I was talking with my friend Marc Lichtenfeld, a passionate advocate for financial literacy who has taught me so much over the years. (Marc explains things clearly and genuinely cares, making it easy to follow his dividend advice – and if I could crown him, he’d be the Dividend King.)

Marc shared many pieces of advice with me about becoming a parent, but one in particular stands out, and it’s worth sharing with every soon-to-be parent—and really, with anyone who wants to build a life they’ll be proud to look back on:

Take a lot of videos. Capture the big moments.

Pictures are wonderful, but videos capture the likeness, the mood, the small quirks in a smile, the way your children laugh together, or the funny way they say something while running across the couch. (On of my personal favorites)

It was some of the best advice we ever received.

Many people told us to cherish the early months and years, but it’s the videos that have become a living time capsule of our lives together, preserving moments my wife and I will treasure forever.

I hope you didn’t tune out because this might sound like obvious advice. This is for everyone, not just parents.

No matter what stage of life you’re in, this can change how you view your future.

Take the time to record the moments that matter.

Capture your parents telling stories, your kids achieving something, the laughter with friends, or even the small moments that bring you joy.

But remember: you also need to be present while living these moments.

You don’t want to be that person glued to your phone the entire concert or family event, recording every second but missing the laughter, the off-key singing, and the fun happening right in front of you.

Life is ultimately a series of moments and experiences, not the tangible items you collect.

Most of all, cherish the people around you, because it’s the people who matter more than anything else.

Capture the moments, but don’t forget to live them, too.

Find the balance between documenting memories and fully living them so you can look back without regrets while staying fully present.

I’m forever thankful to Marc for this advice, and I hope you take it to heart as you build your legacy.

I would love to hear your success stories and how this has impacted the way you view your life and legacy.

To your Legacy,
